Maxi 95 Propshaft Bearing mod

This comes from a Maxi 95 berthed in Greece...

This mod was very successful as I always had doubts about the original setup.  The modified prop bearing consists of a bronze fitting to take a standard cutlass bearing.

The bronze casting is machined so it bolts in place of the old unit using slightly longer screws.  I still have the wooden pattern so it is easy to get bronze castings done (last one cost only seven pounds) but the machining takes a little time.  Sorry no pics but click here for a drawing to give you some idea.

Maxi 95 Propshaft Cutlass Bearing Renewal

The symptoms:

Rattling for the past 6 months -with the engine in gear or or in neutral.

Investigation:

At last we lifted our Maxi 95 "MJOLNER" out of the water to investigate the worn cutlass bearing. It had dissapeared... the pheniolic rubber tube bit had found its way right up the prop shaft and ripped itself out of the brass shell.

A replacement:

Via internet we found a firm called VESCONITE www.vesconite.com who manufacture advanced plastic bearing material and ordered an "off-cut" for £12 which was  enough for two parts.

We turned the plastic to fit the brass sleeve (don't bother to remove it) to 25mm bore and machined in water grooves and fitted the part.  We also added a rope cutter.
