Accessing the internet via your Mobile Phone

To do this you will need either:

A WAP enabled mobile phone

or

A mobile phone with a cable modem or an infrared link; plus a PDA (Palm, Handspring, Window CE or a Psion) or a notebook computer.

I have used a WAP phone, a Palm Vx PDA and a Notebook computer.

WAP Phones

These will allow you to access WAP internet sites. I have tested my SAGEM WAP phone to access weather information and it works well.

My phone: Sagem MW930 WAP Phone, this pay-as-you-talk phone was purchased from the Vodafone web site for £80 vodafone-retail.co.uk and includes £10 of calls. A weather forecast will cost you 5 to 10 pence.

Tips:
1/ Set the phone WAP connection timer to 5 Seconds, then the phone will terminate the internet call 5 Seconds after download.
2/ Enter your weather forcast URL's as bookmarks. Then you just select the weather forecast from the bookmark list.

Palm, Handspring and CE PDA'S

You will need an internet or WAP browser to access the internet, you can also access your email account.

I have tried Kbrowser, WAPmanClassic, PalmAvantGO and MobileID.

As programs change try a search here for WAP and AvantGo

Kbrowser and Wapman are WAP internet browsers. AvantGo is an internet down-loader, you preset what material you want to download via your PC internet connection and then download the current version of the preset data.

You can access your mail account using MsgAgent.

A WAP browser can be used to test your bookmarks for your WAP phone over a normal internet connection.

Notebook Computer

You can use your portable PC to access your mail and browse the internet. You will need a mobile phone and PC with Infrared ports or cable connection. You access your usual dial-up number via your mobile phone. I find that this works fine in the Solent area but not in the South West. Continued dropped lines make internet access almost impossible

Connecting your PDA to the internet via your PC.

You can connect your Palm, Handspring, Psion or Windows CE to the internet and use your normal PC internet connection to browse the internet and test your PDA's internet browser and WAP browser without the excessive cost of mobile phone calls.

You will need to download Mocha W32 PPP for windows 95/98/NT and install it on your PC. Then when you run Mocha PPP your PDA will be able access the internet via your normal internet connection. See the Mochasoft website for details of connection and operation.

Conclusion

I find that a WAP phone provides adequate daily weather forecasts. I use a Sagem MW930 WAP Phone, this pay-as-you-talk phone was purchased from the Vodafone web site for £80 vodafone-retail.co.uk and includes £10 of calls. A weather forecast costs you 5 to 10 pence.

I find the Wap phone more reliable than a PDA or PC as the PDA/PC needs to connect to the internet via an ISP dial up number. I have found these to be very unreliable as far as mobile phones connections and the internet are concerned. At home these connections seem to work well, but as soon as I try them outside the Solent the connection usually breaks down before I have downloaded any useful information. So until the mobile phone companies provides a direct internet port the PDA/PC approach is frustratingly unreliable.
