Lewmar Hatch HingesThere is a danger that the hinge will break if it fitted with a plastic pin - this pin can be upgraded with a stainless steel one from a F.O.C pack from Lewmar - read on. Have you checked your hatches? (Especially if produced after June 2000) Following the usual question to my daughter if she has closed the forward hatch before leaving the marina I luckily checked myself again (which I normally don’t do) and discovered that she correctly locked the handles but the hatch was wide open on the opposite site. Obviously this was the result of broken hinges and dismantling them quickly showed what has gone wrong. The hinge bolts, which go into the alloy profiles were simple plastic and not up for the job. Luckily I could at least get the hatch closed and locked again with the remainder of those nifty hinge bolts. Calling Lewmar they seemed to be not at all surprised and new exactly what I am talking about and promised to send me a repair set within the next days, which I found in the mail back home when returning from our vacation. Luckily that all happened before leaving the marina and not out on sea in rough weather. It’s worth checking your hinges, see Lewmars' Technical Document in PDF format The new hinge bolts coming with the repair set are still plastic but protected by an alloy tube and since the new concept is operating without the adjustable screw in the middle there is no more tension on them that can stop their free movement. To me it’s worthwhile replacing the old ones even if you haven’t had any problems yet. The repair set was free of charge.
